L’anthropologie de la religion ne se limite pas à l’étude des grandes traditions religieuses ; elle explore les cadres symboliques, sociaux et éthiques à travers lesquels les humains construisent le sens du sacré. Ancrée dans une pluralité théorique et méthodologique, elle a permis aux anthropologues de développer une diversité d’objets d’étude, enrichie par les enquêtes de terrain. Ce sous-domaine, qui oscille entre définitions générales de la religion et analyses façonnées par des engagements théoriques en constante évolution, a non seulement intégré mais aussi enrichi les critiques postcoloniales, en interrogeant les catégories héritées. À travers son histoire, il a su se redéfinir en intégrant des problématiques contemporaines et des champs émergents, élargissant ainsi son application à des objets hybrides et interconnectés qui reflètent les réalités mouvantes de la modernité tardive.
