L’évolution de l’archéologie préhistorique dans le contexte nord-américain pendant le XXe siècle et ses relations avec l’anthropologie diffère de la pratique européenne. La présence de groupes autochtones lui a donné, en partie, une orientation qui lui est propre. La pensée archéologique pendant le dernier siècle évolue d’une position de relativisme historique vers une archéologie processuelle et post-processuelle.
