Abstract

Building on the 2024-2025 Entretiens Jacques-Cartier devoted to the theme “Generative AI and University Education: Innovation, Regulation, and Agency”, this article examines emerging uses of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in initial and in-service teacher education. Drawing on a conceptual framework centred on individual and collective agency, it explores the conditions under which GenAI can support professional development and learning beyond strictly technocentric approaches.

The analysis is based on two case studies. The first, situated in initial teacher education, examines the voluntary integration of GenAI in an algebra didactics course, highlighting a shift toward uses centred on understanding, collective validation, and developing a didactic perspective on generated outputs and the use of these tools. The second, conducted in primary in-service teacher education, focuses on the use of a conversational agent embedded in a knowledge-building environment and identifies pedagogical and institutional conditions that foster agency among students and teachers. The findings suggest that the central challenge lies less in technical mastery of GenAI tools than in thoughtfully articulating innovation, regulation, and agency.
