Abstract

The concept of culture shock is inherited from the "culture and personality" current in American anthropology (Benedict, Mead, Du Bois). It bears witness to the relationship between anthropology and psychiatry (1920-1950), and is closely linked to the foreign policies of the US government during the Cold War. Today, this operative concept has been integrated into various research currents (psychology, social work, tourism, international and intercultural studies), and refers to a transient state bringing together a set of symptoms linked to the anxiety of disorientation.
