The sex/gender tandem is not self-evident. Definitions that combine sex and gender in a causal manner need to be made more complex in the light of theoretical advances in the social sciences. Anthropology has documented the great variability of behaviors, attitudes, affects, roles and preferences attributed to men and women, as well as the great plasticity of gender categories themselves in different societies around the world. This variability has made it possible to deconstruct the notion that gender identity is biologically anchored, and the binary gender model that has dominated Western thought.
