Les régions circumpolaires, et tout particulièrement celle située au nord du globe terrestre, ont été l’objet d’une attention soutenue de la part des chercheurs depuis plusieurs siècles. De par l'homogénéité de son climat, cette région du monde s’est révélée une échelle d’analyse propice à la comparaison ouvrant la possibilité de mieux comprendre le peuplement de la planète et la distribution des différents groupes culturels. Malgré la diversité de ces derniers, les scientifiques, au premier rang desquels les anthropologues, ont longtemps chercher à identifier leur uniformité culturelle.
