Related to the perpetuation of violence and stigmatization based on heterosexism, shame marks individual and collective LGBTQ+ experiences. Historically, LGBTQ+ movements have emphasized the possibility of emancipating shame through the expression of pride. However, shame is constitutive of social relations and contested identity construction, while pride participates in the exclusion of certain members of LGBTQ+ communities. From a queer perspective, this article proposes to reconsider the relationship between shame and LGBTQ+ identities to opening the orientation of socio-political activism against heterosexism. Revisiting mainly the work of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and the perspectives of queer activism, this theoretical reflection approaches shame as a critical lever against heterosexist norms, calling
for more inclusive and subversive forms of resistance.
