In 2017, it was discovered thatthousands of Uyghurs, a Turkic-speaking,Muslim ethnic minority, were beinginterned in so-called "re-education"camps in the Xinjiang region ofnortheastern China. These camps intendto cleanse the Uyghurs of the religiousextremism that supposedly afflicts them. This discovery followed several years ofsinicization and cultural and religiousrepression as well as violent incidents bythe Chinese Communist Party. This essaywill outline the underlying causes ofChina's repressive integration policies, aswell as the securitization discoursethrough which China has attempted tolegitimize the use of force and detentionagainst the Uyghur minority. It willattempt to explain how a broad anti-terrorism campaign has served to veilthe use of state terror.
