Beginning in the 1960s, Afrocentrism developed as an academic movement aimed at empowering the peoples of Africa and making them actors in their history. In the 2000s, academic Afrocentrism was plagued by sharp dissension. Today, “Afrocentrism” as a term and a ideology no longer appear only in academic debates, but also in the social, cultural and artistic uses of populations who conceive it as a tool for identity affirmation.
