Two major theoretical currents give quite different meanings to the term "diaspora" leading to prototypic uses in which the two major components of “diasporas studies” are still recognized today. This article therefore explores the paradigms of these two currents, the “classical” one and the rather “post-structuralist” one that has supplanted it since the 1990s.
