A concept coined in the United States in the 1970s by analogy with sexism and racism, heterosexism refers to the set of beliefs that value and promote heterosexuality while denying and denigrating other sexualities. By embedding itself in social, institutional, and cultural practices and everyday interactions, heterosexism perpetuates the stigmatization of non-heterosexual people and communities.
