While ethnography has long been defined by the fact of living away from home, it was not until the work of Claude Lévi-Strauss, Janet Carsten and Stephen Hugh-Jones that the home became a research theme in its own right. Once considered a superficial expression of deep historical dynamics and structures, the home is now seen as a productive instance of society.
