A recent specialty, the anthropology of the Mediterranean world has been built around unifying themes: honour and shame, hospitality, clientelism, violence and vindictive practices, dolorous rituals… This unifying conception has been criticized by many anthropologists. Beyond its unifying themes, shouldn’t the Mediterranean world be conceived as a system of complementary differences (in clothing, food…) between similar societies?
