The transformation of relationships between humans and environments is the root cause of new epidemics, thus forcing public health authorities to reorganize themselves for the prevention of diseases against which treatments or vaccines are ineffective. The avian influenza and SARS crises have played a role in this shift for global health. They have led governments to invest in pandemic preparedness while monitoring pathogen mutations in the environment.
