This text describes the sociohistorical processes, such as colonialism and socioeconomic prestige that can lead to the extinction of a minority language. These processes are analyzed using the concepts of diglossia, glottophagy, and language markets in order to show that a language that was believed to be dying can often survive or even revive after it was set aside.
