The face of diversity in industrialized occidental countries has changed significantly in the last decades. This evolution, alongside unresolved issues regarding the integration of immigrants, called models into question. Interculturalism emerged as a new paradigm to guide municipal actions regarding integration and inclusion. The recent phenomenon of “intercultural cities” draws inspiration on multiple levels from this evolution in local governance.
