This entry addresses the classical concept of extractivism, as well as its new and expanding frontiers. Extractivism is a concept that comes mainly from South American intellectuals, including Uruguayan researcher Eduardo Gudynas, Argentine sociologist Maristella Svampa (2013), and Ecuadorian economist Alberto Acosta (2013). It aims to analyze critically the natural resources industry, a sector dominated by the global North. However, in recent years, the concept has been decentered geographically from Latin American studies and, increasingly, is used in studies addressing indigenous territories in the North. Moreover, the concept is no longer specific to natural resources, but refers to a more global mode of extraction that can involve resources of other natures, such as knowledge, human or non-human persons, etc.
