Abstract

Waste represents an object normatively considered to be undesirable within a particular social system. Ethnological interest in waste arises from structural-functionalist analyzes, initially linked with the notions of purity and dirt. In the 1960s, anthropologists began examining the cultural experiences associated with waste management to understand the social contexts that lead to the acceptance or rejection of certain things—and certain people—as unwanted objects. Instead of viewing waste through a fixed ontology, anthropologists have studied waste phenomenologically, as well as within power relations and broader socioeconomic structures. In a context of ubiquitous pollution, the future of an anthropology of waste remains promising, notably intersecting with interdisciplinary perspectives and concepts such as the Anthropocene.
