From the very beginnings of anthropology in the 19th century, techniques have played a central role in the analysis of social transformations (Lewis H. Morgan). In the 20th century, the French school of ethnology, more than others, and under the influence of the works of Marcel Mauss and André Leroi-Gourhan, continued to analyze techniques and their socio-economic influences. Finally, Michel Foucault, from a different perspective, enriched anthropological reflection on technology.
