The debate on planetary transformations—climatic, geological, and spatial—has sparked growing discussion about conceptualizing what is happening. In the 1990s, a growing group of researchers coined the term "Anthropocene" to signify that human activity altered the planet.
Some authors began to critique the term for its vagueness regarding its periodization and for considering the planet and humans as a whole—as the “agents” of planetary transformations leading to a new era. The notion of the “Capitalocene” began to gain traction in the second decade of the 20th century as part of a critique of the concept of the Anthropocene. Capitalocene emphasizes capitalism as a starting point for a world-ecology perspective. This new form—capitalism—produced new relationships between labor, reproduction, and the conditions of life.
