Comment décrire une discipline qui se définit par sa non-disciplinarité ? Si la littérature comparée est difficile à définir et encadrer, c’est précisément son aspect « protéiforme », comme le suggère Linda Hutcheon, qui fait sa singularité : « [This] is part of the intellectual vitality of the field and part of the continual self-criticism of a protean discipline that has never been willing (or able) to fix its self-definition ». (1996 : 39-40). Penser la littérature comparée comme une discipline se définissant par sa non-disciplinarité implique une manière d’appréhender les objets et d’investir les champs de réflexion ainsi que les processus méthodologiques dans un renouvellement continu.
