L’anthropologie du spatial s’est développée modestement mais régulièrement depuis la fin des années 1950. Elle étudie les dimensions socioculturelles et politiques de l’exploration et de l’habitation de l’espace, réelles ou imaginaires. L’espace supraterrestre devient un lieu de notre monde contemporain autant qu’un objet de fantasmes, nourris par les acteurs de l’astrocapitalisme. L’analogie avec l’expansion coloniale, fréquemment mobilisée pour penser un possible essaimage humain dans l’espace, permet de formuler des analyses critiques sur la reproduction de logiques impérialistes et extractivistes. L’exploration spatiale reflète nos manières d’habiter la Terre et appelle une ethnographie multisite et planétaire. L’anthropologie du spatial considère l’espace comme un objet de recherche aux incidences multiples, en continuité et en interconnexion avec les activités terrestres, tout en demeurant attentive aux possibilités créées par ce nouveau pan de l’expérience humaine.
