Abstract

Despite the fact that natural theology has seen a significant revival for about half a century in the field of philosophy of religion, Charles Taylor maintains that it belongs to a now bygone era. This study proposes to state as precisely as possible the reasons for this verdict. Such an analysis aims to fill an important gap in the secondary literature on Taylor’s work. This gap is due, on the one hand, to the fact that Taylor himself never develops these reasons in a systematic way; on the other hand, it is due to the fact that several commentators seem to presuppose that such an argument does not exist: Taylor would object to natural theology because it does not correspond to the way in which he is inclined to justify his own religious beliefs.
