La quête du plaisir spirituel chez Jean de Saint-Samson
Abstract
In this article, we explore the complexity of spiritual pleasure, often misunderstood due to the ambiguity between the search for spiritual ecstasy and abstinence from carnal pleasure, sometimes perceived as incompatible with spirituality. To explore this theme further, we focus on the Epithalamium of John of Saint-Samson (1571–1636), a mystical poetic work influenced by the Song of Songs, in the flourishing context of French spiritual literature of the early 17th century. We explore Jean de Saint-Samson's life to uncover the motivations behind his spiritual choices. Additionally, this study examines how Saint-Samson employs allegory and biblical references to justify and validate his pursuit of spiritual pleasure and erotic language.
