Abstract

The Hegelian Conception of Skepticism has recently been enjoying a positive revaluation in scholarship. However, this revaluation almost exclusively focuses on the 1802 article “Relation of Skepticism and Philosophy” and the Phenomenology of Spirit. In this paper, our aim is to show how the concepts associated with Hegel’s reflections are present throughout his Jena writings and how these concepts are decisive for the development of Hegel’s early thought. After having summarized the main lines of 1802 article, we show how the concepts associated with skepticism are articulated in the following texts : Faith and Knowledge, The Difference Between Fichte’s and Schelling’s System of Philosophy and The Jena System. In particular, emphasizing the concepts of disunity, antinomy and infinity enables us to show that skepticism is at the heart of what Hegel calls the logic of understanding, which is the first mover of unrest (Unruhe).
