The ethnographic film assumes an ethical responsibility on the part of filmmakers towards the “other” included in their film and is often based on lengthy research and implies a position of closeness towards the “other.” The history of ethnographic film is intertwined with the evolution of anthropological questions (the anthropologist’s subjectivity, representation) and technologies (invention of the handheld camera, synchronized sound, cinéma vérité). There are several genres of ethnographic films (observational, participatory, sensory, experimental).
