Abstract

This entry analyzes the notion of apocalypses in various socio-cultural contexts, highlighting the evolution of research and its diversification, from the field of religious science to that of socio-anthropology. It highlights the symbolic, social and political functions of social movements based on such perspectives, and the place they occupy in representations of contemporary popular culture. The latter uses them to give meaning to current events, pandemics and climate change, interpreted from hybrid apocalyptic matrices borrowing elements from religious, scientific and secular images and discourses.
