Cette entrée analyse la notion d'apocalypses dans divers contextes socioculturels, mettant en avant l’évolution de la recherche et sa diversification, depuis le champ des sciences religieuses à celui de la socio-anthropologie. Il met en évidence les fonctions symboliques, sociales et politiques des mouvements sociaux qui s’appuient sur de telles perspectives ainsi que la place qu’elles occupent dans les représentations de la culture populaire contemporaine. Cette dernière les utilise pour donner un sens à des évènements actuels, pandémies et changements climatiques, interprétées à partir de matrices apocalyptiques hybrides empruntant des éléments aux images et discours religieux, scientifiques et profanes.
