Dans ce texte, j'aborde la question des identités transnationales en commençant par revenir sur la définition du transnationalisme telle qu'elle est travaillée dans les études sur la migration. Je montre comment la perspective transnationale invite à dépasser la méthodologie nationaliste qui continue à façonner les recherches sur les migrations transfrontalières. Les approches transnationales posent la question de la pertinence de l'état nation comme seule unité d'analyse pour rendre compte du déploiement identitaire, des pratiques socioculturelles et économiques, des croyances et des affiliations individuelles ou collectives des migrant-e-s. Les identités transnationales sont le produit de relations réelles ou imaginées, de traditions ou de nostalgie entretenues par des individus ou des communautés au-delà des frontières nationales. Ces relations d'appartenance peuvent être langagières, religieuses, ethniques, raciales ou fondées sur des histoires partagées.
