The article presents different attempts at defining peace based on the history of anthropology. Ethnography first suggested idyllic representations of presumed peaceful traditional societies. A shift happened towards pacification which included a hegemonic perspective. Anthropology contributed to the colonial pacifications which imposed an exogenous order on alienated subordinate societies. This collusion between social sciences and imperialism was denounced. Another definition implies that positive peace derives from social justice.
